Abstract

Avian coccidiosis is caused by intracellular protozoans parasites known as Eimeria species. The parasite development cause diarrhoea, morbidity and mortality, and has serious economic impact in the poultry industry worldwide. Thus, Coccidiosis remains one of the most expensive and common diseases of poultry production in spite of advances in chemotherapy, management, nutrition, and genetics. However, this paper focuses on a review concerning anticoccidial drugs and testing in birds, resistance and its origin, poultry management, alternatives for anticoccidial drugs including dietary modulation, natural additives and herbs comprising of botanicals to coccidia. The paper also viewed at the treatment programme for coccidiosis control as well as its potential implications in meat tissue to man.
