Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the chemical properties and presence of bacteria from selected Fadama soils of Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Nigeria. Total Heterotrophic Bacterial Counts were determined using standard procedures from four locations at 20cm depths during the dry season. Microbial isolates were characterized and identified. Chemical parameters were also determined. Five (5) bacterial isolates were characterized and identified; Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, E. coli, and Corynebacterium sp., with Klebsiella having the highest bacterial population of 40% and E. coli showing the least (6%) percentage occurrence. The result from chemical analysis also reveals that the soils were strongly-moderately acidic, while organic carbon, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, and CEC observed below from all four Fadama soils. Therefore, this result shows that the Fadama soils are low in fertility and will need to be augmented with organic and mineral fertilizer in order for them to produce maximally.
