Abstract

In a study to evaluate the influence of different colours of 40 walls incandescent bulb light source on the egg indices of laying hens, 300 Isa brown point of lay birds were allotted to white, blue, red, green and yellow colours of light denoted as T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 treatment groups respectively and each treatment group was replicated three times in a completely randomized design. A 12D/12L lighting regime was used all through the study period and light intensity ranged between 10 – 15 lux. Standard management practices for laying hens were maintained all through the study period. Water was supplied ad libitum, while known weights of feed were seen given to them. Egg weight, egg shell weight, egg shell thickness, egg width, egg length, egg shell %, albumen height, albumen width, albumen length, yolk height and yolk width were measured while the Haugh unit was calculated. Results showed all external and internal egg quality characteristics studied with the exception % shell, yolk height and Haugh unit were influenced by wave length. Green colour came tops for egg weighty, egg length and width. Egg shell thickness was higher for blue and red. The highest albumen length and width, and yolk width came from green colour. Overall, green colour produced the best egg.
