Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of a digital computer, computer-controlled machine or robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings like humans. The importance, challenges and applications of artificial intelligence in Nigeria is the focus of this paper. The paper discussed the concept and origin of artificial intelligence and presented some of its importance as related to Nigeria. Specifically, the challenges of artificial intelligence in Nigeria were given while some applications were also given as a means of showing its ability to enhance the economy of Nigeria.  Finally, the paper discussed the prospect of artificial intelligence in the world of technology in general and Nigeria specifically. Based on the importance, challenges and applications surrounding artificial intelligence in Nigeria, some recommendations that will encourage the development of artificial intelligence were given. One of such recommendations is that innovative research and policy-making are needed on the use of artificial intelligence technology in workplace management, monitoring and hiring of personnel.
