Abstract

Fasting, or Sawm in Arabic, is a fundamental component of Islam. Every Muslim is required to fast during the month of Ramadan, according to the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Muslim scholars’ consensus. As we will see in this paper, the fundamental goal or reason behind the institution of fasting in Islam is to instil discipline and God consciousness in the lives of every Muslim believer.
